Description
A young woman stands, deep in thought.
Head down in concentration, her eyes focus on the ground below, allowing her thoughts to wander without interruption.
How often do we spend time like this? Indeed, if we stand and stare at the ground, people will come up alongside and ask, “Are you okay? Are you depressed or anything? Your head is hanging down.” So rarely do we take time away from the many obligations facing us to “do nothing.”
It isn’t “doing nothing,” really – thinking. Indeed, taking time to think is one of the most important things we can do, and for this reason, doing dishes by hand isn’t such a bad activity. After all, since we’re officially “doing something,” no one will think us strange, but because what we’re doing – washing dishes – does not engage our whole brain, we are able to think, wonder, contemplate, concentrate, and meditate. Folding clothes serves the same function, providing a new element to chores that we have traditionally thought of as just that – chores.
The young woman in Colombiana has a confidence in herself to simply think without hiding behind the activity of something “normal.” Actually, because her need for thought is so great, she requires such full concentration that even doing dishes or folding laundry would hinder the process.
How often do we take time to think like this? How often do we seek out silence so that we can intensely follow our thought patterns from one place to another, building one idea upon another until we build a structure of mental stability and imagination? Society discounts such activity as unnecessary, and encourages us to constantly have the music on, constantly check our phone, constantly watch the latest reality TV show and follow someone else’s life, but we all – like the woman in Colombiana – need precious time to think our very valuable thoughts – in peace, and silence.
